The Hellenic Professional Society of Illinois began in 1925 when Dr. Polyvios Korrylos and Dr. Nikolaos Salopoulos gathered Greek professionals in Chicago to form a professional society focused on intellectual growth, education, and Hellenic culture.
Originally known as the Greek Professional Men's Club, the organization quickly became a center for lectures, discussion, mentorship, and community engagement.
Over time, the Society expanded to include professionals from many industries and officially became the Hellenic Professional Society of Illinois in 1954 when women were welcomed into membership.
Today, HPSI continues its mission more than 100 years later by connecting generations of Hellenic professionals throughout the Midwest.

The mission of HPSI is to:
Uphold the honor and dignity of the professions represented by its members
Encourage fellowship and community
Promote education and lifelong learning
Support the arts, sciences, and Hellenic culture
Work alongside organizations that strengthen the Greek-American community

The Hellenic Professional Society of Illinois began in 1925 when Dr. Polyvios Korrylos and Dr. Nikolaos Salopoulos brought together Greek professionals in Chicago with a shared vision of education, intellectual discussion, and Hellenic unity. Originally called the Greek Professional Men’s Club, the organization quickly became a center for networking, cultural exchange, and professional fellowship within the Greek-American community.
From its earliest years, HPSI served as a meeting place for professionals of Hellenic descent. Doctors, lawyers, educators, business leaders, and entrepreneurs gathered to exchange ideas and support one another professionally and socially. As the Greek-American community grew, HPSI expanded its membership to include professionals from many different industries and generations.
HPSI became known for hosting lectures and discussions focused on history, politics, culture, and current events. Many topics sparked passionate debates and encouraged thoughtful conversation among members. These educational programs helped establish HPSI as a respected intellectual and cultural organization within Chicago’s Greek community.
Over the years, HPSI introduced social and cultural events that brought members together in a more relaxed environment. Holiday celebrations, networking mixers, annual parties, and community gatherings became an important part of the organization’s identity. These events continue to strengthen friendships and preserve Greek traditions across generations.
One of HPSI’s earliest initiatives was recognizing and mentoring college graduates of Hellenic descent. Scholarship programs were later established to encourage higher education and professional achievement. This tradition continues today through support for education, mentorship, and leadership development within the Greek-American community.
Women were originally excluded from membership. In 1954, under the leadership of President Gus Mazarakis, HPSI officially welcomed women into the organization and changed its name to the Hellenic Professional Society of Illinois. This marked a major turning point in the Society’s history and reflected the evolving role of Greek-American professionals in the community.
Throughout its history, HPSI has been guided by dedicated leaders committed to preserving Hellenic culture and supporting professional growth. In 1975, Angelique Sallas, PhD became the Society’s first female president — another historic milestone for the organization.
Today, HPSI continues to connect Hellenic professionals across Illinois, Southern Wisconsin, and Northwest Indiana through networking, philanthropy, education, and cultural engagement. The Society remains committed to preserving Greek heritage while supporting the next generation of professionals and community leaders.
Become part of a professional and social community rooted in Greek culture and committed to future generations.
